Parker Colorado History

Parker was originally established around 1863 by Alfred Butters as the Pine Grove way station. Before this, the area was used as a hunting ground by Indians. Archaeologists have found several semi-permanent hunting camps.
The original building constructed by Alfred Butters was a tiny one-room building just south of the Parker United Methodist Church. Butters served travelers, handling mail, supplying provisions, transmitting messages, and providing a refuge for travelers. Due to its location in the pines, it was named Pine Grove. After initial construction, the building changed hands several times eventually being sold to Mr. and Mrs. George Long in 1864.
The Longs moved the building to it's current location on Mainstreet and added several additional rooms including a second story ballroom. Additional buildings were also constructed. During this period, the Longs renamed the structure 20-mile House because it was situated approximately 20 miles from Denver. 20-mile House operated as a stage stop providing meals, lodging, and provisions.
The buildings again changed hands several times eventually transferring to James Sample Parker sometime between 1870 and 1874. 20-Mile House Grew and prospered and additional facilities were added. The 20-Mile House became Pine Grove's first post office on December 8, 1870.
When Parker's daughter reached school age, Parker provided the first schoolhouse, paid the salary for the teacher's first year, and provided her with room and board.
